Vitamin D & Sports Performance

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin because your skin can absorb it through sunlight. That can be a challenge in northern latitudes during the colder months, and being deficient could impact athletic performance. Consider the findings of a review of literature published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Researchers noted that Vitamin D receptors are found in muscle tissue and that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the hormonally-active form, is responsible for regulating more than 900 gene variants. They speculate that vitamin D might play roles in boosting muscle performance, increasing force and power production, and accelerating recovery.
