It's All In Your Genes

If you think you're stuck with a certain body weight or physique because of inherited traits, you may be both right and wrong. Right because genes do influence many physiological factors. Wrong because new research suggests that genes can be controlled through lifestyle changes.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, followed 30 men who switched to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, exercised daily and devoted about an hour a day to meditation or another stress management technique. After just 3 months they lost weight, lowered blood pressure and turned off 453 disease-promoting genes. They also turned on 48 genes programmed for disease prevention.

The Bigger Picture: Eating right and exercising can influence the body in ways science has yet to fully comprehend. The good news is that the vast majority of these influences have a positive impact. Just be careful not to overdo any aspect of your diet and training program. Long-term success can be realized through moderation and balance.
