If you live in a major metropolitan area, chances are pretty good that public transportation is an option for getting to the office. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, taking the bus or train could be your ticket to greater overall fitness and health.

The research conducted in 2005 and 2006 included 2,364 men and women who worked outside the home. Questions during physical examinations revealed that 17% of this group engaged in active commuting, where significant walking or biking was part of the daily grind. As a group, these active commuters appeared more fit, were less likely to be overweight, and had better blood pressure and insulin levels.
