Work Around For Prolonged Sitting

It’s common knowledge that sitting in front of the TV for extended amounts of time isn’t good for you. Neither is sitting at a desk during the work day. You might not think there’s much you can do about the demands of the job, but a study published in the American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology suggests otherwise.

Researchers compared the blood flow of 11 healthy young subjects before and after 3 hours of sitting. They noticed a reduction in leg blood flow. But when subjects tapped one foot for a minute with 4 minutes of rest between sets of tapping there was an increase in blood flow to that leg. It’s no substitute for getting up and walking around, but a little rhymic fidgeting might help.
