Workout Tip For Hockey Skating Performance

Strength training can improve running or cycling performance, and plyometric training can help build lower body power production. Hockey players working at increasing sprint skating speed might consider a combination of both according to research published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance.
 
Eighteen ice hockey players took part in an 8-week training intervention that involved 3 workouts per week. Some started their training with plyometric exercises and the rest incorporated core exercises in their program.
 
All subjects built more muscle and increased their squat one rep max. They also improved repeat cycle sprints and performance on a multistage aerobic skating test. But the plyometric group outperformed the core exercise group in 10 meter on-ice sprints.
