“I’m looking to hit as many calories as I want!” England Rugby and Exeter Chief centre, Henry Slade, burns so many calories during his training session and match days that when it comes to ‘Cheat Meals’ he actually struggles to put on added weight!
When tasked to create his favourite cheat meal, the 25-year-old was licking his lips at the chance to create a monster burger that fell just short of a whopping 1000 calories but managed to surpass the huge calorie count by adding a side portion of fries.
Henry’s burger consisted of a mega 5% fat beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, 2 rashers of streaky bacon and topped off with a single hash brown.
- 500g 5% fat lean mince beef
- Hash browns
- 2 rashers of streaky bacon
- 1 slice mature cheddar cheese
- 4 large Maris Piper potatoes
- Burger bun
- 1 ripe tomato
- 1 red onion
- Fresh cos lettuce
- Salt, pepper and onion powder to taste
Hash Browns Method:
- Preheat the oven to 230°C /Gas Mark 8
- Place on a non-stick baking tray and pop it into the top of the oven.
- Bake for 18 – 20 minutes, turning them every now and again, until crisp and light golden.
- In a large bowl combine beef, salt, onion powder and black pepper
- Divide into patties and mould each piece into a round shape, roughly 2.5cm thick.
- Place the burgers onto a plate, drizzle with oil, then cover and place in the fridge until you are ready to cook.
- To cook the burgers, preheat a large frying pan for 4 minutes on a high heat, then turn the heat down to medium.
- Place the burgers on the pan, then use a spatula to lightly press them down; making sure the burger is in full contact with the pan.
- Cook the burgers for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, depending on how well cooked you want them
- In a separate pan, fry the bacon for 2 minutes either side over a medium heat
- Wash and dry a few small lettuce leaves, tearing up the larger ones. Slice the tomatoes, peel and finely slice the red onion and add to the bun
- Place cheese over the burger for 90 seconds until it begins to melt
- Move the patty to the bun and add the bacon. Place hash brown on top of the stack.
- Preheat oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6.
- Cut the unpeeled potatoes into 1cm thick chip wedges.
- Wash and dry on kitchen paper.
- Place on a non-stick baking tray and drizzle with olive oil, season to taste with salt and pepper
- Bake for 35 minutes turning halfway through cooking
