Value Of Progressive Training

Value Of Progressive Training If you've been going to the gym regularly, you've probably felt the urge to go all out and not on just one occasion either. A study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise shows how challenging yourself without going overboard can enhance your capacity for sustained performance.

Researchers recruited 10 experienced cyclists and had them engage in 13 exercise tests over a 4-week period. After establishing maximum capacity, the riders performed 6 minutes of heavy exercise below critical power which is the maximum power output possible during that time period. Later on they engaged in a more severe bout of exercise above critical power. Heavy exercise increased the amount of work cyclists could perform at the limits of their capacity while severe exercise did not.

True Strength Moment: This study demonstrates what's possible with a well-planned methodical approach to progressive training compared with simply working as hard as you can every training session. While everyone wants to explore the limits of their own performance, you don't need to go there every time you work out. That can be counter-productive.
