L-Carnitine is a conditionally essential amino acid derivative that contributes to the production of ATP biological energy. Now University of Connecticut researchers report in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research that L-Carnitine supplementation may also play a role in post-workout muscle rejuvenation. Athletes participating in the study performed 5 sets of barbell squats (15 to 20 reps each). Both 1- and 2-gram dosages of L-Carnitine reduced the markers of metabolic stress and muscle damage in these subjects.

The Bigger Picture: Although more research needs to be conducted in this area, L-Carnitine appears to have potential as a muscle recovery and anabolic agent. Considering the nutrient's established reputation for assisting with weight management and lowering cholesterol levels, supplementing with L-Carnitine could turn out to be a very sound fitness strategy.
