In-Season Speed Endurance Program

In-Season Speed Endurance Program Team sports athletes looking for a way to enhance on-field performance during the season might want to try this once-a-week program that appeared in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. It helped soccer players improve by an average of 11%

Researchers had 18 sub-elite soccer athletes run between 6 and 9 all-out sprints (90% to 95% of maximal intensity). Each sprint lasted just 30 seconds. This speed endurance training protocol was worked into the regular practice session once a week for a total of 5 weeks. Compared to team mates who didn't apply it, speed endurance training improved performance during a yo-yo intermittent recovery test.

True Strength Moment: Although player sprint speed and agility remained the same for both groups, improving your ability to handle the demands of high-intensity exercise throughout an event is going to propel you past players who are running out of gas. It only took these athletes 30 minutes a week to see noticeable improvements.
