Team Sports Speed Training Drill

Team Sports Speed Training Drill Acceleration is a key attribute of many successful team sports athletes. If the competition can't catch you, there's not much they can do to keep you from scoring. A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research analyzes two different approaches to developing on-field quickness.

Some female soccer players participated in 12 sessions of high-speed treadmill running with body weight support. Others used a standard treadmill with no support system. Compared to a control group that stuck with the normal training routine, 40-yard dash speed was significantly increased for both groups, with normal treadmill running producing the greatest increase in knee flexor strength. The downside was 66% of subjects experienced shin splints and foot pain training on a regular treadmill.

True Strength Moment: This is one of those situations where specialized equipment produced superior overall results. The high-speed treadmill runners who had the benefit of body support increased their acceleration speed while only 8% reported any leg muscle discomfort. If your school has advanced training equipment like this, get some qualified instruction on how to apply its potential.
