New Fitness Trend Is Old School

New Fitness Trend Is Old School The American College of Sports Medicine has been publishing an annual Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends in their Health & Fitness Journal every year since 2007. This year marks the first time that Body Weight Training was included on the list, coming in at number three behind Professional Education/Certifications and Strength Training.

Although body weight exercises have been around for thousands of years, this new trend isn't limited to the calisthenics you performed in high school gym class. Workouts can utilize suspension systems, weighted vests along with wrist and ankle weights.

True Strength Moment: Depending on your goals, there might be some very real advantages to working body weight exercises into your strength training routine. Most body weight movements are functional, involving multiple joints. The increase in motor unit activation can contribute to enhanced strength performance for competitive sports.
