How Do You Define Intensity?

How Do You Define Intensity? An article published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine attempts to start a discussion about how the word intensity should be applied to resistance training. Is it related exclusively to the load, which is the amount of weight loaded onto a barbell, dumbbell or weight machine rack? Or can intensity also be used to describe the effort involved with lifting that weight?

True Strength Moment: Lifting 90% of your one rep max (1RM) is definitely going to be more challenging than working with just 50% of 1RM, and so more intense. On the other hand, ballistic and high-speed reps require considerably more effort than a traditional 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down cadence, so the workout is obviously going to be more intense.
