The Double Down Protein Diet

The Double Down Protein Diet It's a little known fact that you can lose almost as much muscle mass as body fat on a typical diet. But what's typical? With so many diet plans out there, it's hard to know which one makes the best fit for your goals. A study published in The FASEB Journal helps narrow the options for active adults focused on building muscle while burning fat.

Researchers from the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine put young male and female subjects on three different reduced calorie diet and exercise programs designed to reduce body weight by two pounds per week. Some consumed the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein while others got twice that level. A third group tripled the RDA for protein. Doubling protein intake helped preserve muscle mass while reducing body fat.

True Strength Moment: While this study suggests the RDA for protein might be a little low for very active people, it also shows that too much of a good thing isn't necessarily better. Study subjects who tripled the RDA for protein realized no greater success than those who simply doubled the recommended amount.
