Intensity With Instructor Vs. DVD

Intensity With Instructor Vs. DVD There's no shortage of workout DVDs available on the market today. Sales of these recorded workout instructions have been increasing for years. Does their effectiveness compare to what you'd experience with a personal trainer at the gym? A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research suggests maybe not.

Twenty college-aged females with low to moderate levels of fitness performed six exercises with a personal trainer or watching a DVD. After a few days, they switched to the other approach. Energy expenditure and heart rate were significantly higher when training with a live person compared to a recorded image.

True Strength Moment: Not only did subjects get more out of one-to-one human interaction, 89% stated a preference for that approach. After all, a prerecorded instructor can't tell what level of effort you're putting into the workout.
