Because signaling through mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays such an important role in protein synthesis and muscle growth, researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston wanted to measure the effect of mTOR signaling activation with amino acids. Scientists provided a leucine-enriched essential amino acid and carbohydrate solution to 8 male athletes after they trained with weights. The control group received nothing. While the fractional synthetic rate of muscles was elevated for both groups up to an hour after exercise, the rate for the EAA/carb drinkers remained elevated for 2+ hours.

The Bigger Picture: According to this recent study, enhanced activation of mTOR signaling results in greater synthesis of muscle proteins when essential amino acids (with emphasis on leucine) and carbohydrates are consumed after resistance training. This finding supports previous studies that served as the basis for creating ON's 2:1:1 Recovery. With a 2-to-1 ratio of carbohydrates to proteins, and a 2:1:1 radio of leucine to isoleucine and valine, it's formulated to promote anabolic muscle rebuilding as well as glycogen replenishment.
