It's Not A 'Do As I Say' World

The old saying 'do as I say, not as I do' has never held much water. And a new study published in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health might just sink it for good. Researchers surveyed 1,124 twelve year old children and their parents about their commitments to physical activity. They found that children with two physically active parents were 95% more likely to participate in sports than kids with inactive moms and dads.

The Bigger Picture: You don't have to be participating in organized competitive sports to realize the benefits of an active lifestyle. Going to the park for a family game of softball or touch football can be very beneficial. If you haven't been active in a while, try starting out with family walks or bike rides before moving up to more demanding activities. The more you get out and enjoy life, the greater the potential for healthy returns.
