Getting Older & Staying Active

Sure, you're dedicated to an active lifestyle now. But what'll it be like when you're 60 or older? A survey conducted between 1999 and 2004 by the National Center for Health Statistics paints a fairly grim picture. Only 27% of the 60+ aged respondents enjoyed 150 or more minutes of leisure time physical activity on a weekly basis. And over 52% reported not being physically active at all!

The Bigger Picture: An analysis of data showed that those who were married, well educated, living comfortably and in good health were most likely to engage in physically activity. That makes sense because these people were most likely to be aware of exercise benefits, and had the free time and health profile to regularly engage in hiking, biking and low-impact sports. It's not too much of a stretch to assume that many of these people maintained an active lifestyle decades before reaching their Golden Years.
