Pulling In The Medals

Over the past few decades, American rowing teams have dominated the World Championships, but consistently come up short during Olympic competition. All that changed in Beijing when the USA women's eight beat the Netherlands and Romania by more than a second to win Gold in the sport's signature event. The American men's eight crew pulled in the Bronze medal, and single sculler Michelle Guerette hauled in the Silver.

The Bigger Picture: Whether you're competing as a team or an individual, against others or just your own personal best, success is a matter of training, diet and motivation. The daily grind of watching what you eat and going to the gym will eventually lose its appeal unless you set an attainable goal and work toward its accomplishment. You'll know where to go next, because there's always another level to reach.

Medal Tally (as of noon CDT): USA 95 [29 Gold, 34 Silver, 32 Bronze], China 83, Russia 51, Britain 40, Australia 38.
