How Healthy Eating Comes Together

If you want children to grow up eating the right kinds of meals in the right proportions, research published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior suggests establishing regular family meal times. The study of 677 adolescents examined eating patterns over a period of 5 years. Those who took part in regular family meals 5+ times per week were much more likely to sit down to breakfast and consume more vegetables, calcium-rich foods, dietary fiber and minerals in their diet.

The Bigger Picture: Even though family meal times played a significant role in establishing healthy eating patterns, the vast majority of these students still didn't take in the recommended daily amounts of vegetables, whole grains, potassium, magnesium, fiber and vitamin E. Most adults don't either. The fact is, we can all do better when it comes to healthy eating.
