A Ray Of Sunshine

The weather's warming and the sun's shining brighter. Time to take that indoor gym routine outdoors. Just be careful to monitor your ultraviolet exposure. Although sunshine's a great way to naturally increase vitamin D intake, overexposure carries negative health risks that are best avoided altogether. Here are some helpful tips for safely enjoying fun in the sun.

Be most concerned about the sun's rays between the peak intensity hours of 10AM to 4PM. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen that's at least SPF 30, applying 20 minutes before going outside and every 2 to 3 hours thereafter. Clouds only filter out 20% of the sun's UV rays, making it a good idea to use sunscreen on cloudy days too. A typical cotton T-shirt gives you SPF 6 level protection, so keep that in mind when applying lotion.

The Bigger Picture: There's nothing wrong with spending lots of time outside on the beautiful Spring and Summer days to come. As long as you're smart about it, you can enjoy the great outdoors to the fullest. Just like you do with training.
