Fruits, Veggies & Cardio Health

Regularly eating the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day can be a challenge for anyone. But a study published in the journal Circulation provides one more very good reason to make the effort. Irish researchers had 117 volunteers consume either 1, 3 or 6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day for a total of 8 weeks. Following up with extensive testing, they discovered that every serving consumed led to a 6.2% improvement in blood flow.

The Bigger Picture: While the subjects in this study were all suffering from hypertension, eating right can benefit anyone and everyone. The low GI carbs will refuel muscle glycogen stores after exercise and promote fat-burning while you're on the treadmill [as reported in yesterday's ON Breaking News]. If eating right also supports cardio health, so much the better!
