Exercise Mood Boosting Benefits

Many studies have shown that, in addition to building fitness and melting fat, exercise leaves participants with a very positive outlook. Scientists from the University of Vermont – Burlington wanted to see how long this feel-good effect lasted. So they recruited 48 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 years and had half of them peddle a stationary bike for 20 minutes at a moderate intensity. The other half didn't exercise. Guess which subjects realized a mood boost that lasted up to 12 hours?

The Bigger Picture: Both men and women who exercised for this research benefited equally from the feel-good after effect. Their level of fitness didn't seem to matter either. The bottom line is the endorphins and other neurotransmitters released during exercise will leave you feeling better every time. That's as true for the regular gym rat as it is for the weekend warrior.
