Weight Loss By The Numbers

How long do you need to exercise to lose weight? While it's impossible to determine an exact amount of time that will work for every body type, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) does have a general guideline you can apply. It's 150 to 250 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week.

The Bigger Picture: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that healthy adults under age 65 perform at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly. That's 30 minutes a day, five times a week. Obviously, to lose a little weight, you'd have to do more. And to initiate significant weight loss, the ACSM recommends 250+ minutes per week – at least 50 minutes a day, 5 days per week. Adding intensity to your workouts can work even greater wonders.
