Eternal Optimism Is Healthy

Strengthening your muscles requires serious dedication to weight training, but helping your system fight off an infection might be as simple as positive thinking. Research published in the March issue of Psychological Science suggests that immune response is more powerful in optimistic people.

The 4-year study of 124 law students assessed the mood of individuals who were given a shot of antigen, which leaves a bump on the skin. Immune response can be determined by the size of the resulting bump. The more optimistic a student reported feeling, the harder their immune system was working.

True Strength Moment: Not only did positive thinking people exhibit a greater immune response in these study subjects. Those who saw the glass as half-full instead of half-empty were notably happier and more attentive than their pessimistic counterparts. Brain power has a strength all its own.
