Strength Training Best for Newbie

If you're a beginner basketball player, you might be tempted to undertake ballistic power training to improve your jump height. Although that approach will generate results, a study published in the NSCA's Performance Training Journal suggests that you'll get better long-term results from strength training.

Researchers had 24 untrained men follow a program of either squats (strength) or jump squats (power). After 10 weeks, those in the power training group were able to jump higher, but the strength training men posted more impressive improvements in muscle activation and peak force.

True Strength Moment: As the saying goes, you have to be able to walk before you can run. Likewise, this study recommends working on building your overall strength before engaging in sport-specific training. That's the path to take if you want to become a better all-around athlete.
