Caffeine & Cardio - Good For Your Skin?

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a combination of caffeine and exercise may help kill off precancerous cells damaged by ultraviolet-B sunlight. Three groups of hairless lab mice were exposed to UV radiation. One group drank the daily equivalent of 1 - 2 cups of coffee. Another ran on a wheel. The third group drank caffeine and ran. That last group of mice showed the highest rate of apoptosis, which is how the body rids itself of damaged cells.

The Bigger Picture: While no one recommends caffeine consumption and exercise as a replacement for sunscreen, researcher Allan Conney believes, "We need to dig deeper into how the combination of caffeine and exercise is exerting its influence at the cellular and molecular levels." It's important to note that previous studies have also linked increased exercise or caffeine consumption with lower cancer risk.
