The study measured changes involving 200 different metabolites in the body. They recruited 70 healthy people who exhibited varying degrees of fitness and had them all participate in 10 minutes of vigorous exercise. Metabolic changes lasted an hour or longer for all study subjects. However, the 25 marathoners in this group exhibited ten-fold increases in fat-burning metabolites compared to subjects of average fitness.
