Several recent studies point to multiple health benefits offered by olive oil. The New York Times reported that the compound oleocanthal contained in olive oil works like ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. Olive oil also lowers the 'bad' cholesterol LDL. In addition, long-term consumption may promote cardiovascular health while reducing the risk of some cancers. In a separate study published in Nutrition Research, supplementation with olive oil extracts was found to improve the lives of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients. This same study also underscored olive oil's ability to promote heart health.

The Bigger Picture: Tastes tests conducted by Consumer Reports found that some of the cheapest brands of olive oil tested the best. The overall consensus was that you should buy the oil by price for cooking and by taste for salad dressing. It was also noted that terms such as 'virgin' and 'extra pure' were confusing to consumers and didn't really mean much in terms of product quality.
