How Training Volume Influences Swim Performance

In just about any sport, performance can decrease with advancing age. For swimmers, that means slower finishing times. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine suggests an increase in training volume can help older athletes to a greater degree than younger competitors.

Analyzing data from 692 competitive swimmers who were members of the U.S. Masters Swimming Association, researchers calculated that an increase of 10 kilometers per month in training can help reduce swim times regardless of age. The effect was more pronounced in middle aged and older swimmers.
