Catch A Wave For Fitness
Surfing isn’t an option for most high school physical education programs, but for schools located near the beach, a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research suggests practicing the sport amounts to a pretty decent cardiovascular workout.
For 8 weeks, scientists tracked the efforts of 24 male and 4 female high school students enrolled in gym surfing classes at 2 high schools. The average class period was just over an hour, and they spent a little more than half that time paddling with most of the rest devoted to wave riding. This effort helped them attain the recommended heart rate for a duration which can help improve fitness.
