Men Are Natural Competitive Eaters
With the holidays approaching, a study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition will be of interest to any male who’s trying to keep their healthy, balanced diet on track. Researchers suggest that, due to their competitive nature, men tend to overeat in social dining situations. Even if they aren’t thinking about it, they want to eat more than the next guy.
Scientists had male and female college students take part in a chicken wing eating contest. Some participated in front of a cheering crowd, and others competed without an audience. The prize was a worthless plastic trophy.
Men who ate wings in front of spectators consumed 30% more than those competing without an audience and described the experience as exciting. Women consumed fewer wings with a crowd cheering them on and described the experience as embarrassing.
