Omega-3 Fatty Acids & Anaerobic Endurance
Fish oil is a popular supplement and a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. It’s been a matter of speculation whether these fatty acids support sports performance, and a study published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism adds to the debate with research on soccer-specific training.
For 4 weeks, 26 competitive soccer players supplemented with Omega-3 fatty acids. Some received a placebo. Training intensity, match performance and nutritional intake was monitored throughout the program. Although there were no differences in strength, power or speed, subjects who supplemented with Omega-3s showed increased anaerobic capacity compared to the placebo group.
